Christian Association of Nigeria has warned that calling for the resignation of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, following allegations of sexual harassment against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is too early.

CAN stressed the need for elders and respected figures in the country to mediate in the dispute and uphold the integrity of the National Assembly.

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that the development is coming, following days of controversy between the former governor of Akwa Ibom State and the female lawmaker representing Kogi Central.

Senator Natasha accused Mr. Akpabio for punishing her during a plenary session in February, 2025 over her refusal to grant the Senate President sexual advances.

Denying the allegation, Akpabio’s Wife on Friday, noted that her husband is a man of integrity who will never engage in such act.

Reacting to the development in a statement on Tuesday, Chairman of CAN in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, Rev. Joseph Hayab, described the situation as shameful and unfortunate.

Rev. Joseph emphasised on the importance of a peaceful resolution.

He said: “There is a need for elders to intervene. Akpabio and Natasha have people they respect and hold in high regard.

“The National Assembly must take responsibility for addressing the matter.

“Any group calling for Akpabio to resign should desist because no one has been proven guilty in this matter yet. Taking sides will only escalate the issue.

“No one should trivialize an allegation of sexual harassment, but Nigeria has moved past an era where people play the victim card. The focus should be on resolving the matter responsibly rather than apportioning blame.”
