Amid rising political tension in Benue State, the State Caucus in the National Assembly has strongly condemned the recent developments in the state House of Assembly, particularly the controversial removal of the State Chief Judge,Justice Maurice Ikpambese.
Describing the action as unconstitutional and illegal, the caucus declared it null and void. The lawmakers from the state issued a strong call for the National Judicial Council (NJC) to intervene immediately and prevent an impending constitutional crisis.
Speaking at a press conference after plenary on Wednesday, the Benue National Assembly Caucus warned that failure to address the situation could force the National Assembly to take over the affairs of the Benue State House of Assembly as provided for in the constitution.
“This press conference serves as a notice to the NJC to step in immediately to nip the looming crisis in the bud,” they said.

They further cautioned that the National Assembly might be left with no choice but to invoke its constitutional authority to take control of the Benue Assembly if the crisis continues, citing the incompetence of a section of the House to uphold democracy and the rule of law.
The Caucus of the elected National Assembly members from Benue State resolved as follows:
“The immediate and unconditional rescission of the unconstitutionally illegal resolution to remove the State Chief Judge by the Benue State House of Assembly;
“The immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the decision of the faction of the Benue State House of Assembly to suspend some members of the House of Assembly; and
“Extension of the support of the Caucus of the elected members of the National Assembly from Benue State.”
